Has anyone implemented Lawson Security on their own without the help of consultants?  If so, how long did it take you?  What was your experience like?

Have you taken any of the Lawson Security classes? It's a complete redesign of Lawson thinking on security. Very flexible, but in my opinion too flexible.
If you abandon your LAUA thinking (strongly advise to do) and start over from scratch it will take you a long time to build/test and implement the rules/roles/security classes. If you want a shortcut, buy Lawson's pre-packaged quickstart security classes. These are not meant for production use, just a breakdown of functional areas with enough rule samples to get you started building your own.
I think it took us 6 months with consultants, and with the quickstart packages... or I think they call them FastTrack.
If you know a lot about javascript it may be a lot easier for you to attempt. We didn't know anything about it when we first started writing rules.
Also, STAY AWAY from building any parent/child relationships in your roles and/or security classes. Our consultant recommended building them that way to save time, and I think that is where most of our issues lie.
Good luck if you attempt this on your own.
