Hi, I am trying to change the entry in period 7 which was closed. But I can't reopen the period?

your period is final closed or limited closed? Which version are you on, I haven't heard of issues with reopening periods.

We closed July 2011 limited. But, we have still December 2010 closed as a limited. I think we are in S3.

Go to GL10 for the company, and click on the 'backpost' button, which will open GL10.2. Change period 7 from 'L' to 'B' and click change.

I did that. But, when I go to GL45 to change the entry. But, it says Cannot back out journal entry for this period.

On the 'journals' tab on GL10, do you have "Allow backout of posted entries" = 'N' ?

Even if period 7 is opened for backposting, on GL45 you cannot change an entry with "History" status. But you can post an entry to reverse it, and then post another entry for the correct amounts.

I believe that you can, by unposting and unreleasing. However, it depends on the system from which it came. I do agree that often the best solution is to copy the entry first (with the reverse amounts option) to reverse it, and then a second time to make your corrections. And none of that requires backposting. Just put it in the current period.

Pretty sure I ran into this same issue in the past. You can unpost and unrelease an entry sitting in current period 8, but if you try to (B)ackout an entry (status is history, not posted) in prior period 7, you will get " cannot backout journal entry for this period", even though you have period 7 allowed for backposting. I'll keep an eye in the event it does happen again.
