I am in the process of updating all of our active item master records (IC11) with their UNSPSC codes.  The table that stores all of them in the system is IC516.  Even though it's an 8-digit number, broken up into four 2-digit codes (Segment, Family, Class and Commodity) that each have a description, you are only allowed a short (20-character) and long (250-character) description for the entire 8-digit code.  So, I am interested in how others have handled this description issue in the past.

In our system, we often use Nuvia to update items that we are cleansing. However, you'll notice that those description fields are the same as those on IC11, where there is also an UNSPSC tab.

We use NuVia also and that is where I pulled all of the codes and the description for each 2-digit field.  But in the IC516 you are only allowed a short and a long description in total for all 4 2-digit fields.

I do not understand your question entirely? We put NuVia's UNSPC description in both fields and just let the short description cut off.

          UNSPSC Code: 47131502
          Loaded in IC16 4 ways -
47 00 00 00 short description and long description both: Cleaning Equipment and Supplies (the UNSPSC Segment description)
47 13 00 00 short description and long description both: Cleaning and janitorial supplies (the UNSPSC Family description)
47 13 15 00 short description and long description both: Cleaning rags and cloths and wipes (the UNSPSC Class description)
47 13 15 02 short description and long description both: Cleaning cloths or wipes (the UNSPSC Commodity description)

47 13 15 02 is what is loaded in IC11 - the rest are used when we report to "roll up" items together as needed.

          Does that help?

Well that is interesting. I was told that for the entire UNSPSC I only get a short and a long description, but I was under the impression that an UNSPSC code is 8 digits and every 2 digits has a further meaning. Maybe I am looking at this "too small" and I need to think about this a bit longer. Must be because it's Monday. Thanks!

For instance UNSPSC code 42182808 is broken down as follows:

            Segment 42 - Medical Equipment & Accessories & Supplies
Family 18 - Patient exam & monitoring products
Class 28 - Medical weight scale
Commodity 08 - Covers or liners for weighing scales
