AM153

AM153 - Asset Bar Code Labels

**Form Purpose
Run Asset Bar Code Labels (AM153) to send a request for one or more bar code
labels to a bar code printer. You can request either asset bar code labels or
space bar code labels. The program creates a comma-separated (CSV) workfile
that can be downloaded to the bar code printer for printing.

**Prerequisites
For asset labels, you must make sure all exisiting bar codes are scanned in
or entered in the Asset Management application before you start generating new
ones. For space bar code labels, you must define the location and location
detail levels before you can requirest a bar code.

**Procedure at a glance
There are two distinct processes, each generating a separate print file. You
can generate either asset bar code labels or space bar code labels with one
run. You cannot generate both.

TO PRINT ASSET LABEL CODES

1. To request a number of asset labels not yet assigned to assets for
printing, enter the requested number in the Print Number of Labels field;
leave the Asset and Item fields blank.

     -or-

To reprint a bar code label already assigned to an item, enter the asset and
item numbers in the Asset and Item fields.

2. If you want more than once copy of the label or labels, type a number in
the Number of Duplicates field.

3. Run the program to create a workfile named LABELS-OUT.csv in the
$LAWDIR/productline/work/LABELS-OUT directory.

4. Download LABELS-OUT.csv to the bar code label printer for printing.

TO PRINT A SPACE BAR CODE LABEL

1. Select a location in the Location field, and enter location detail levels
in the appropriate fields.

2. If you want more than once copy of the label, type a number in the Number
of Duplicates field.

3. Run the program to create a workfile named LABELS-OUT.csv in the
$LAWDIR/productline/work/LABELS-OUT directory.

4. Download LABELS-OUT.csv to the bar code label printer for printing.

**More help
When you request asset item bar code labels that have not yet been assigned
to assets, the program finds the next available bar code numbers (up to the
number requested) in the bar code file (AMBARCODE) and gives them a Reserved
status. This ensures that requests for bar code labels from various
departments in the company never generate duplicate labels. The AMBARCODE file
keeps track of the bar code numbers reserved and assigned, including bar codes
interfaced into Asset Management before you start generating new bar codes.

You can reuse bar codes for interfaced assets as long as you scan in the bar
codes before you generate any new ones.

When a new bar code is printed, it is still in Reserved status. A reserved
bar code can be placed on any asset at random. When you add an asset and
associate it with a scanned or typed bar code, the bar code number takes on a
status of Assigned. Once assigned, a bar code can be reprinted only as a
duplicate bar code for the asset.
