My company is considering delivering W2s electronically via EMSS. We'd like to develop our own solution and would appreciate feedback from anyone else who has done same.
Currently, we have a program (that we wrote) that reads the spoolfile produced by PR297 and tweaks the output position of the data to fit in the W2 boxes. I'd like to modify that program to produce a separate PDF file of each W2 (using a blank W2 form as an AFP Overlay) with the naming convention: W2_yyyy_nnnnn, where nnnnn is the employe number. Then we could serve up these PDF files using EMSS.
Does this seem like a reasonable approach? Has anyone done it like this before? Or can someone recommend a simpler/better approach?
TIA...Chuck

Don't build it. Buy it. There are several vendors who already have it. Leverage their product which already integrates into EMSS. Don't reinvent the wheel.

My understanding is that you have to allow employees to opt into the electronic W-2 system and keep a record of same.

I've got a demo set up with a company I've seen refernced in the Forums called MHC.
Can anyone provide the names of other companies I should be talking to?

My company issues them with this paid tool made especially for a purpose of working with W-2 form

Take a glance, maybe it would fit quite better. Yet had no experience with EMSS exactly
