We are trying to enable access to our lawson portal from outside our WAN. We are using a third party appliance to facilitate the connection from outside our WAN to the portal server. When we do this will all traffic, internal and external have to go through this third party appliance or can the external come through the third party appliance and the internal traffic just hit the portal server directly?

Assuming you're on LSF9 and Websphere, see this post which I think is similar to your situation.

The URL on the internal and external side will need to be the same, and resolve to the appropriate internal/external addresses.
