Turning on Control Characters

We are attempting to interface with the Lawson portal via some imaging software called FileDirector. They have a link program called Codeless Connector, which should link to various fields in the Lawson Portal. Instead of linking to individual fields, it wants to highlight the entire window in the Lawson portal.

We have been told by the FileDirector developers that we need to turn on Control characters in the Lawson portal. Does anyone know if this is possible? If so, how is this done?
