834 file for Health

I'm trying to build the HIPAA834 file for Health and it appears to be a situation.  I can create a sequetial file but must be able to remove the embedded spaces between the asterick (*).  ie I have a field that can be 1 to 10 positions, I need three position.  I can't leave the other seven blank I must remove and replace with an asterick and then the next field starts.  Another example is if the field is not populated then I must have two asterick to delimit the field.

Can anyone give me some suggestion as to how I can complete this task correctly?
